Session Plan – Practical Final
System
Strategy
DO/DT - Based on the field geography heat map, pressure the ball to the Left & Right Channels in Zones 3 and 2 into 1.
Tactics
- Press as a unit as soon as we lose possession
- Deny any inside channel passes
- Direct play into the Half Spaces and Left & Right Channels
- The opponent in possession of the ball must always be under constant pressure
- Move defensive lines forward, as necessary, to maintain pressure on the opponent
Skill Set
Defensive Actions:
- Angle of approach
- Close the space down quickly, slowing down on approach
- Keep your feet moving
- Scanning. Know where you are on the field and where the opponents are, and recognize attacking threats.
The players will participate in a full session to help them learn how our DO will benefit our team playing in our 1-4-3-1-2 formation, and applying pressure to the opposition in Zones 3 and 2 into 1 and gain possession back through the Left & Right Channels.
Ability level - Mixed (OPDL & IModel)

We are learning to: Apply defensive pressure in Zones 3 and 2 into 1 to force the opposition to play into the Left & Right Channels to create opportunities for us to win possession of the ball and transition to attack.
What I am looking for:
All players: Are able to identify when, where and why we want to apply pressure in Zones 3 and 2 into 1 to force the opponents to play wide vs central areas.
Most players: Are able to recognize how to apply pressure in half spaces and the centre channel to create opportunities to win possession in zones 3 and 2.
Some players: Are able to recognize opposition AO and apply defending/defensive cues to pressure and win possession, resulting in AT in zones 3 and 2.
- The angle of approach, closing the space down quickly, slowing down on approach, keep feet moving, scanning
- DENY - Any inside channel & forward pass
- If you can win the ball back, win it
- DELAY - Opposition from advancing by using strategic recovery runs to win possession and/or provide support/cover
- If you can't win the ball back, delay the opponent making forward progress
- DIRECT - Opposition into the left and right channels. Strategically direct opposition into traps to intercept the opponent's passes and regain possession
- Force the opponents to advantageous space(s)
- CONTROL & RESTRAINT - Understand the defensive roles & responsibilities in Zones 3 and 2 into 1
- Being patient to regain possession
- BALANCE - Apply & maintain the suggested System, when applying pressure in Zones 3 and 2 into 1
- Maintain team shape, deny space
Coaching Details - Discovery Game
Discovery Game
- (Two (2) 30 x 20 playing areas on one side of the field)
- 4v4 (plus neutral and/or goalkeeper) in each playing area
- Divide each playing area into equal-sized halves
- Have the neutral and/or goalkeeper on the end line of the playing area
- Setup 3v3 in one half of the playing area
- Setup 1v1 in the other half of the playing area
- Divide balls between the two playing areas (16 size 5 balls)

Organization
- Play starts with the (R2) neutral and/or goalkeeper playing the ball to a teammate (R3 or R4)
- The opposition (W) are trying to gain possession and transfer the ball to their teammate in the opposite/other half.
- The opposition (W) try to prevent the Reds from playing forward and look to regain possession
- If the Red win possession, they must play the ball to the neutral and/or goalkeeper teammate stationed in the opposite half to be awarded a goal
- When a team score a goal by transferring the ball into the other half, play continues in that half with the team that scored
Principals
Defensive Organization
- Closest defender to the ball initiatives the press and must get touch-tight to the player in-possession
- Defenders should approach side-on when pressing and force the opposition to play passes into congested areas
- Prevent receiving players from turning, the defender should get there before the opposition takes a touch
- When Neutral/Goalkeeper are in possession, attacking team should make the field big using width and depth
- When not in possession the defending team should try to make the pitch smaller and be in position to defend on the attackers first touch

- Prevent play/passes centrally
- Prevent play forward to break our defensive lines
- Anticipate behaviours of attackers and those supporting players
- Read body position and visual cues of supporting players on and off the ball

Principals

5W/1H Framework
(Who, What, When, Where, Why & How)
- Look to pressure quickly, show attacker/opposition outside first
- Pressure with purpose
- Team organization - Mobile, Compact & Central
- Timing of movement and body position to limit opposition options to play/pass wide
