I don't believe the phrase "what a journey it has been" has ever been more meaningful to me since embarking on my journey to complete the CONCACAF B Diploma with Canada Soccer. Reflecting on this significant period of time and experience, which has been filled with ups and downs, challenges, growth, and memorable moments, has been, at times, draining, while also inexplicably exhilarating.
When I submitted my application and payment to complete the registration process, I had a wonderful plan or so I thought. Life really does have a funny way of challenging you along the way. Who knew life as a _<insert any of the below>_ could get any more complicated:
- Son, eldest of 4 children
- Husband of 17 years
- Father of 2 sons (11 & 13 yo)
- Step-father to 2 daughters (28 & 31 yo)
- Grandfather of 1 (9 yo)
- Uncle of 5 immediate nieces (4) & a nephew and many more extended n&n's
- Full-time Business Professional at the National Insurance Trade Association (Insurance Bureau of Canada)
- Under 11 Boys Grassroots Coach (Program Lead for 3 teams)
- Under 13 Boys OPDL Coach
- Vice President of a CSA Nationally recognized Club at Pickering F.C.
Looking back now, it brings to mind yet another famous quote from arguably one of the best boxers in the world, Mike Tyson. When a reporter asked Mike Tyson whether he was worried about Evander Holyfield and his fight plan, he answered, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” What Tyson said is similar to the old saying, “No plan survives first contact with the enemy.” But does this mean that there is no need to plan? Absolutely not!
While my original plans went out the window, I can reflect back on when this journey started at shared that I haven't done too bad. In the Personal Goal Setting section of my portfolio I've been able to complete and or keep up with a number of items this year:
- Coach of an Ontario Player Development League (OPDL) team ✅
- Pilot Club Futsal Program ✅
- Achieve CONCACAF 'B' Diploma ✅
