Module 1 – Welcome & Observation of Competency

This module helped to welcome attendees and set attendees’ expectations for the course around expectations and learning intentions.

Module Summary:

  • This module helped to welcome attendees and set attendees’ expectations for the course around expectations and learning intentions
  • Understanding the role of a development coach in Canada.
  • Understand and review how to interpret the game.
IDENTIFY AND REFLECT ON THE DIFFERENT COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS THAT HELP US TO DETERMINE THE LEVEL TO WHICH A COACH IS DEVELOPING THEIR SKILLS WITH THEIR OFF-FIELD WORK FOR THE DURATION OF THE LICENCE.
  • Curiosity – The ability to explore different contexts and meet diverse needs
    • Asking questions of the Learning Facilitators to really understand the “Why” of what is being discussed/taught. Asking these questions will support the off-field work, when you are back in the classroom or online.
  • Accountability – The ability to take responsibility for one’s actions
    • Coaches are responsible for managing their teams including stakeholders, players & parents. In the course coaches are also responsible for taking responsibility for the off-field work as well, ensuring that the work is completed with the level of detail that is required to support the learning outcomes.
  • Openness – The ability to focus on progress over perfection
    • Coaches must be open to moving forward and continuing to learn and adapt. If things don’t go exactly as according to plan that’s ok. Not every session or game goes as planned and we can’t win every game.
  • Leadership – The ability to guide others in a process of growth
    • Coaches don’t have to be the perfect coach/instructor/mentor however, they should be comfortable in inspiring and leading others in learning and/or experiencing new challenges.
  • Teamwork – The ability to cooperate and collaborate with others
    • Coaches should be able to work with others, stakeholders, players and parents in a team environment on and off the field towards similar goals and objectives.
TOPIC

This module is about…

One thing I found very interesting about this module was…

A quote from the module that stood out…

One thing that I found interesting in this module was the way the Learning Facilitators introduced the Coach Education Core Principles. While they are easy to understand, I’ve sometimes struggled with connecting them to coaching and subsequent learning.

Inquiry – Begin with curiosity and encourage Learners to experience information within real-world contexts
Ownership – Strike a balance between active support and inspiring students to make motivated self-directed progress
Growth – Value an open mind, view challenges as opportunities, and the demonstration of effort and ability over time
Equity – Identify, remove, and prevent barriers and promote practices that will help individuals reach their full potential
Community – Connect individual learning to the broader development of groups and societies

MY OPINION

In my opinion…

From my own experience…

In my own life…

In my experience as a Soccer Administrator (Treasurer) for a Nationally Licensed club in Canada one thing that I recently encountered but never considered before in various planning activities was the Equity component. This stood out to me in particular because sometimes there may be barriers in sports that go unnoticed based on your role and engagement in the sport. As a male player, I never truly appreciated what a female player may feel / experience playing a game in the rain with a white uniform on.
CONNECTION TO MY ENVIRONMENT

This connects to my environment and coaching because…

This connected to my environment and coaching because we recently had a number of our female programs at the club sign a letter and put forward a request to not have the below articles of clothing/kit items considered in our next uniform RFP:

  1. Predominantly / plain white jerseys
  2. White shorts

As a board, we had to connect with our stakeholders and vendors to come up with potential solutions with lead to:

  1. White jersey with a ‘print’ on the chest area
  2. Black game shorts
